Biography

Author of The Butcher of Amritsar (2005), Firelight of a Different Colour (2014) and A Death in Hong Kong (2018; winner of the RAS History Prize). Served for twenty years in the British Army and is currently Managing Director of the Gurkha International Group, which finds employment for Gurkhas and Nepalese men and women worldwide, principally as crew onboard cruise liners. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and Member of the Society of Authors. During Army service, he published A Grammar, Phrase Book and Vocabulary of Baluchi (1983) and An English-Nepali-English Dictionary (1993). He co-founded the Tongzhi Literary Group in 2008, and was for many years a moderator for the Literary Festival and Hong Kong Correspondent for Fridae.asia. He is Secretary and Director for the Pink Alliance. Developing the Heart, his account of E.M. Forster’s relationship with India, will be published by City University Press in late 2020.
