The Scars of Hong Kong Walking Tour – Philip Cracknell

In December 1941 Japanese forces invaded Hong Kong; the resulting battle ended with Hong Kong’s surrender and more than ten thousand civilian casualties. The combatants were made up of British, Canadian, Indian, Portuguese and Hong Kong Chinese. Local historian Philip Cracknell will lead guests through one of the major battlefields in Hong Kong, focusing on the area around Wong Nai Chung Gap and Jardine’s Lookout where the crucial battle took place. There are many military remains, including the ruins of gun batteries, pillboxes and bomb-proof shelters. Cracknell will explain what happened at each location and provide context and insight into both the battle and the Japanese occupation, which lasted until liberation in August 1945. The walk—mostly flat or downhill with one or two short uphill sections—is not suitable for young children, but it is suitable for adults of any age.
