The Looming Shadow of Dystopia

With the support of the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong

The towering piles of e-waste in Chen Qiufan’s Waste Tide. The chilling, twisted reality of near-future Britain, warped by climate change and polarized politics, in John Lanchester’s The Wall. The bleak world of Gilead—minimally coloured but for the bright dresses of the women—in Renee Nault’s graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Join Chen, Lanchester and Nault for a conversation about dystopian worlds in both literature and real life. This session is moderated by the University of Hong Kong’s Professor of English Literature Dr. Jessica Valdez.

Opening act by Jocelyn Li

This session will be opened by local writer Jocelyn Li, a local Hongkonger and native Cantonese speaker who writes poems in English.
