Frank Dikötter:
A dictator cannot rule through fear and violence alone, only he who can compel his people to acclaim him will hold the greatest power for the longest time. In How to Be a Dictator, author Frank Dikötter, a celebrated historian and Chair Professor of Humanities at the University of Hong Kong, examines the ways eight modern dictators developed and sustained a cult of personality and turned free-thinking citizens into subservient sycophants. This talk, which is moderated by South China Morning Post writer Fionnuala Mchugh, examines the origins of the cult, which is often times at the very heart of tyranny.
