Douglas Stuart in Conversation with Alan Cumming | Douglas Stuart 與 Alan Cumming 對話

“Douglas is incredibly entrenched in that great Scottish working-class tradition of storytelling, but he’s coming at it from being an outsider in your own country…He’s bringing a queer sensibility to it.” (Alan Cumming, New York Times Oct 23, 2020)

「作為一個土生土長的蘇格蘭裔美國人,Douglas出色地描繪了傳統的蘇格蘭勞動階層,他有一種獨特的鑒賞力。」(Alan Cumming,《紐約時報》,2020年10月23日)

Join us for Q&A with the 2020 Booker Prize Winner on 25 March, 2021 at 8:00 pm.

Hong Kong International Literary Festival and Bookazine invite you to a conversation between 2020 Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart and award-winning actor, author, filmmaker and activist Alan Cumming, co-hosted by Montclair Literary Festival. Stuart’s debut novel, Shuggie Bain, is a heartbreaking story of addiction, sexuality, and love. It follows the childhood of Hugh “Shuggie” Bain and his wayward, alcoholic mother Agnes, and is also an epic portrayal of a working-class family in 1980s Glasgow. In naming Shuggie Bain the winner, the Booker Prize judges said: “We were bowled over by this first novel….It’s a desperately sad, almost-hopeful examination of family and the destructive powers of desire.”

The novel, a New York Times bestseller, was also a finalist for the National Book Award and many other prizes and was named a Best Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Times, NPR, TIME, BuzzFeed, the Economist and many more.

Fellow Scot Alan Cumming became friends with Douglas Stuart after reading Shuggie Bain. “I was so moved by it, and I found it hilarious as well,” he said in a trailer for the Booker Prize award ceremony in November 2020. “There’s nothing better than having a book you can’t wait to pick up again.” This is the first public event the two Scottish-Americans have done together.

Join us on March 25 at 8:00 pm to hear Douglas and Alan discuss Shuggie Bain, family and growing up in 1980s Scotland, and at 9:00 pm we present a live Q&A with Douglas Stuart from his home in New York. Email your questions in advance to info@festival.org.hk or post them on our event platform during the event.

Tickets cost $200 and include:

  • Conversation between Douglas Stuart and Alan Cumming
  • Live Q&A with Douglas Stuart
  • A copy of Shuggie Bain; the first 100 copies signed by Douglas Stuart
