She speaks directly to a Hong Kong audience about the meaning of education in different cultural contexts, and shares her personal struggle to reconcile her desire for education and autonomy with her desire to be loyal to her family. Born in Idaho to a father who opposed public education, Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. In 2014 she was awarded a PhD from Cambridge University and she is now a senior research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. Educated has sold more than eight million copies and been translated into 45 languages. For her staggering impact, TIME Magazine named Westover one of the 100 most influential people of 2018.
