2021 HKILF Brings Back "Wish" Poetry Contest
September 20, 2021
This year, the 21st Hong Kong International Literary Festival “The Rebound Edition” will bring back the poetry contest for secondary students. HKILF collaborates with local poets and Writing-Plus, the creative writing initiative at the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).
The contest dates are from 20 September to 20 October 2021. Specific deadline is at midnight on Wednesday 20 October 2021. Only one entry is allowed per person, and the entries must be in a word document or PDF format, including student’s name, age, and school. Entries should be emailed to info@festival.org.hk with the subject line WISH POEM CONTEST.
Inspired from Mary Jean Chan’s poem “Wish”, HKILF now invites young writers to explore this evergreen literary theme according to their own interpretation.
Regarding participation, instructors can use the workshop and writing prompt to support students to compose their own poems and join the contest. Schools can also engage with local poets, Tim Tim Cheng or Antony Huen to run a private online workshop for groups of students.
After pre-screening, 10 shortlisted poems from each age group will be judged by poets Will Harris for S1 to S3 (Grades 7 to 9), and Mary Jean Chan for S4 to S6 (Grades 10 to 12).
Winners will be announced during the literary festival 5-14 November, and will be invited to an award ceremony as a part of the festival’s closing night event on Sunday 14 November to read their winning poems.
Further details of the contest are available here.
