Richard McGregor was appointed deputy news editor for the Financial Times in September 2009. Prior to that he was the Beijing bureau chief, and before that he was the Shanghai correspondent. McGregor has worked for The Australian as the chief political correspondent in Canberra and as China correspondent in Hong Kong.  He has also worked for the International Herald Tribune, the BBC and the Far Eastern Economic Review and has held various journalistic roles in Taiwan, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. McGregor graduated from Sydney University in 1980, where he studied law, economics and French.
